Cutting vs. Copying.
The decision to cut or copy data is one that can often save more than a few extra keystrokes. On one hand the copy function duplicates data from one cell and allows the user to paste into a different cell, with the data remaining in the original cell unchanged. On the other hand we have the cut function, which takes data from one cell and moves it to another cell of your choosing, leaving the original cell blank.
How to use the “Cut” shortcut:
Step 1: Select the cell you wish to cut.
Step 2: Execute the “Cut” shortcut by simultaneously pressing the “command” key and “X”
Now we see our data has a blinking outline. This means it is ready to be transferred to another cell, and the data is being stored in a clipboard on the computer. The transfer of data, or pasting, must be executed before any other shortcuts or commands are performed.
Step 3: Execute the “Paste” shortcut, found on our blog post dating to May 3rd, 2013.
Execute the paste shortcut, “command” + “V”, in the cell you wish to transfer your data to.
And there we have it. The data is cut from the left cell and pasted to the right cell.
I find myself using the cut function when I know the data is being moved to a specific location, and will need no further formatting or modifications. It is a matter of preference, as some people prefer to copy most of their data to ensure the copying is executed correctly, so try both copy and cut shortcuts out and see which one you prefer!
